El Corte De Madera Creek Open Space
 Woodside, CA  (Mountain Bike Trails)

You start at about 2000 ft and drop into the forest on singletrack/doubletrack trails. The downhill can be long and fun, but remember you have to climb up eventually so save some energy. You may encounter a few rocky technical sections on the descent. There is a lot of tight, fast singletrack that curves in and out of the humongous redwoods. Some of the best singletrack I have ever ridden. The first time I went we took the Timberview Trail to the Virginia Mill Trail. Had to dismount and cross a creek at the Virgina Mill Trail because some trees were knocked down covering the trail. We climbed up on the South/North Leaf trails and finally took the El Corte de Madera Creek Trail back to Skeggs point. The trails are all well marked, I’ll definitely be back to ride some of the other trails in the network. If you are looking for awesome downhill, sweet singletrack, or a test of your climbing abilities, this place has it all. A great place to get lost in the redwoods.

Filoli is the location where the TV series Dynasty was filmed.  It is a beautiful estate located in Woodside, Ca. The gardens are gorgeous. They have a cafe for lunch. They have a shop where you can buy wonderful items and even plants that you won’t find at your local nursery that have been grown on site. The estate is not open year round, call for dates. Christmas time is magical. They open usually the day after Thanksgiving and have the most wonderful treasures to purchase for gifts. The estate is decorated for the Holidays and is breathtaking.

Purisima Creek Redwoods

Woodside, CA  (415-691-1200)

If you are staying in Half Moon Bay and want some foresty exercise, come up to Purisima Creek Preserve. It has several entrances; we took the Higgins-Purisima Road access and it was quite challenging. Costant switchbacks with one lane access- we were tooting our horn at every corner for a while. Our best advice: take the Purisima Road access which is further down HWY 1 a couple of miles, but you will not be terrified during the drive. It ends up at the same parking area. So, we got there, and it’s only got about 10 parking spots… late arrivers parked up the street off-road. We noted the signage for mountain lions, rattlesnakes, ticks, etc, but saw none of them. The Creek trail is about a mile long, before splitting off into other multi mile options Three other trails start at the trail head, as well.. It was cool and sunny, and the redwoods and deciduous trees were gorgeous along side of the babbling brook. Tremendous height trees and huge burned out or cut down stumps showed how big the first growth forest was originally. We only spent an hour hiking in and out of the Creek trail before going down to the coastal trail along the water, but this is a must see alternative to the beaches!
